Next time you’re in town, try M.E. Swing’s near the White House (it’s on G Street NW near 17th Street). They’ve been in town since early 20th century, have an old-school coffee bar, and can do a mean dry cappuccino.

You may wish to try Quartermaine in Bethesda at some point. They have their own roasting facility and while I don’t believe their barristas are epicureans, they make good coffee on a manual Italian machine.
Modern Times Coffeehouse at Politics and Prose Bookstore is great, they use a roaster in Charlottesville VA where the owner used to work, beautiful hand-pulled espresso, super staff; Big Bear on the opposite side of town is equally awesome quality and atmosphere.
I believe the best roasted coffee beans can be obtained at Qualia (locally roasted!!). They are located on Georgia Ave just up from the Georgia Ave metro stop. Misha’s in Alexandria VA is also good.
I’m sorry you had a bad day at Peregrines, which is one of my favorites. Also really good — Tryst on 18th st, Baked & Wired in Georgetown.
